Acupuncture for migraine

Migraine manifests as severe and replaced headache, generally unilateral. It is characterised by sudden repeated headache , which may resolve spontaneously or with drug treatment without sequelae , and recurrences after various periods when the patient is free from headache. The pathogenesis is in stagnation of liver qi with the invasion of stomach qi.

Migraine headaches respond well to Shaochong (H9) . Manual stimulation of LI4 produces immediate relief (not to be used in pregnant women).

In the treatment of migrane, the Gall Bladder Meridian,is used most frequently and remote points in the four extremitities are used. Acupoints in yang meridians especially Fengchi(GB20),Sizhukong (TE23) and shuiagu (GB 8)in shaoyang meridians are used most frequently. In terms of classification of the special points selected besides the crossing points with meridian qi passing through and crossing in the head, points below the elbow and knee joints such as source points,Luo connecting points, eight confluence points as well as five shu points.

Acupuncture alleviates Depression And Anxiety:

There are modern researches and findings which confirm the efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine view that acupuncture enhances drug treatment efficacy, and reduces the chance of relapses.

These modern findings are consistent with the TCM principles including circulating the chi, calming the spirit , stabilizing or descending the uprising yang and lifting the qi.

Generalised anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental disorders
According to TCM principles, acupuncture points benefit the internal organs , restore physiological function, promote qi circulation and balance yin and yang. The acupuncture points on kidney channel ( KI 13 and Qipang) improve brain functions and have tranquilizing effect, thereby mitigating anxiety.
In general , acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neurochemical messenger molecules.

- Acupuncture deactivates the analytical brain ,which is responsible for anxiety and worry.
-Regulates hormones like serotonin, noradrenaline, dopamine,GABA ,neuropeptide Y hence altering the brain's mood chemistry.
-Reversing pathological changes in levels of inflammatory cytokines that are associated with anxiety.

Acupuncture for epilepsy

According to the traditional Chinese medicine , this condition is usually related to Deficient Kidney and Liver Yin . Injury to the Kidney Yin causes Interior Wind to arise in the Liver and Phlegm to rebel upward , disrupting the Qi in the channels and confusing the mind and senses .

A book of Ming dynasty , Outline Of Medicine , explains : In epilepsy the Phlegm Excess rebels upward . Because the Phlegm Excess rebels upward , the Qi in the head becomes disorderly. Because the Phlegm Excess rebels upward , the Qi in the head is disorderly . Because the Qi in the head is disorderly , the vessels close and the orifices of the head , transforming the phlegm , and calming the Liver by extinguishing the Wind.

A typical seizure is preceded by dizziness , headache , and suffocated feeling in the chest which shows the upward perversion of the wind phlegm.

Point Prescription:
Principal Points
Fengfu GV 16 ( fengfu)
Renzhong Du 26 ( Jingwell Point)
Taichong Liv 3 ( To calm the mind )
Fenglong St 40 ( for froth)
Generally we press hard at the point Renzong Du 26 by finger nail.
Supplementary Points :
Shenmai UB 62 ( Shenmai ), K 6 (Zhaohai) , P 6 ( Neiguan ) or H 7 ( Shenmen ) and Gv 24 ( Shenting)

Method : Principal points are used first . For grandmal type epilepsy , add K 6( Zhaohai ) if the seizures occur during the day , UB 62 ( Shenmai ) if at night . Other supplementary points may be used where appropriate .
For Petitmal type epilepsy , P 6 ( Neiguan) , H 7 ( Shenmen ) and G V 24 ( Shenting ) may be added to tranquilize the mind. For psychomotor type epilepsy , add P 5 ( Jianshi ) and H 7 ( shenmen) to awaken the spirit , and St 40 ( fenglong ), to clear the chest and cause phlegm to descend. For focal epilepsy , add LI 4 ( Hegu ) and Liv 3 ( Taichong ) to open the 'Four Gates', GB 34 ( Yanglingquan ) to relax the muscles and tendons , and SP 6 to regulate the leg yin channels. In addition to the points above , GV 20 (Baihui ) awakens the brain .

Role of liver in stress

Role of liver / Gallbladder in stress

The liver is a large, dark-red gland in the upper part of the right side of the abdomen , just beneath the diaphragm. In both western and Eastern medicine , the liver's main functions include storage and filtration of blood , and metabolism of hormones. But according to Chinese medicine says that the liver is involved in the smooth flow and distribution of blood, emotions , and qi. Liver Qi is responsible for all transformations in the body , including ovulation.

The Liver is important because if liver qi stagates emotional energy becomes blocked, depression , anger , sadness , or weeping may be experienced. There may be headaches , abdominal cramps ,chest pain and a variety of physical and emotional symptoms . If the channels remain closed the flow of energy to the uterus will be impeded , and then menstruation is associated with pain and cramping.
Liver imbalances that cause energetic obstructions confine the energy of this important system to a very small space. This confinement of energy creates a large amount of heat ,which ascends up the gallbladder meridian and can cause migrane headaches , even small annoyances may become exaggerated to the level of frustration and anger , blocking already pent up emotional energy. Alcohol consumption damages the energetic function of the Liver.

Acupuncture to boost fertility

In cases where it is difficult to identify the cause of infertility, acupuncture does really give new hope. Acupuncture is a slightly slower road when compared to IVF but that may have a better outcome. Researches from past have discovered that acupuncture can substantially increase the success rate in IVF patients. Since then a growing number of woman have included acupuncture with their IVF protocol. But it is highly advisable to use acupuncture to let your body utilize its maximum potential towards fertility before one starts with IVF.

Chinese body focuses on the whole body, as well as the mind and spirit. Acupuncture’s success stories prompted several researchers to take a closer look at how the treatment works. In 2003 an article was published in Cornell Medical Centre’s journal Fertility and sterility evaluating acupuncture’s success. One showed that acupuncture increased blood flow to the uterus and therefore uterine wall thickness, an important marker for fertility, acupuncture lowers stress hormones, normalizes the hypothalamic - pituitary ovarian axis, and increased endorphin production – all the conditions for healthy pregnancy.

Acupuncture with a healthy diet, managed stress, and sufficient sleep are the foundation to help a couple’s fertility quotient.

Concept of Needling And Moxibustion Techniques

Acupuncture techniques originated from stone needle ( Bian Shi ), an ancient concept that involved the application of stone needle for treating diseases  , it later became known as "needling techniques ".  Now a days, its meaning is widespread and it refers to the specific manipulation and methods of stimulating acupoints, using different needle or non needle tools for the treatment and prevention of disease. Moxibustion originated from the ancient "jiu lou", also called "aijiu", which refers to treating and preventing diseases by using the burning moxa. The broad definition treating and preventing diseases by using the heat of burning moxa wool in conjunction with other medicinal substances such as garlic / Da Suan, ginger, and aconite or other Chinese medicines for therapeutic purposes .

Acupuncture is considered mechanical stimulation, whereas moxibustion is heat stimulation. They are frequently used together in the clinical setting. Ling Shu Guan Neng says "if disease cannot be treated with acupuncture, moxibustion might be suitable method ". This is indicative of how the two complement each other where clinical treatments are concerned .Both have the effects of clearing the meridians and collaterals, promoting the circulation of qi and blood, regulating yin and yang in the internal organs and certain parts of the body via acupoint stimulation, ultimately resulting in reinforcing the body's resistance and eliminating pathogens in an overall effort to cure disease.

Origin And development of needling and moxibustion techniques

1. The origin and development of acupuncture techniques
The origin of acupuncture techniques
The origin of needling tools can be traced back to remote, ancient times. The Chinese ancestors employed the utilization of simple stones in the form of various utensils in their daily life. As they entered the Neolithic Age, the ancestors gradually developed the ability to incorporate stone axed knives and needles into their practice.

As a stone instrument in ancient time , stone needle was considered to be as the earliest form of a needle . Many different literary records concur with the fact that stone needle originated during the Neolithic age and was applied as an instrument for puncturing abscesses and stones to drain pus and blood . Over time it was gradually developed into an instrument of acupuncture.

The evolution of the material composition of acupuncture needles had a close relationship with the development of productive forces in society. Besides stone needle (Bian Shi ),ancient needles were also made from bamboo, pottery, and bones among other substances. With the development of metallurgy, the society entered into Bronze Age, and during the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties bronze needles were formed. Iron instruments were developed in the Spring-Autumn Period, during which time, smelting techniques were developed and improved. Stone needle was replaced by "Nine Needles until Warring States Period and the Qin, Han Dynasties. It was at this time that acupuncture techniques were formed.

The development Of acupuncture techniques
Following the reform of acupuncture instruments, there was a continuous improvement in acupuncture techniques. Nei Jing summarized the ancient acupuncture techniques. Nei Jing summarized the ancient acupuncture techniques and made brilliant exposition. For needling techniques and twelve needling techniques are mentioned for manipulation before the Ming Dynasty summarized the essence of acupuncture manipulation before the Ming Dynasty ,pointing out that there were strong or gentle needling techniques such as the drastic reinforcing and reducing methods ,the even methods in addition to the 12 and 8 techniques of inserting needles ,which are all commonly used in the clinic .After the middle of the Qing dynasty ,there was decline in new developments and innovations in acupuncture techniques .A new period of great developments occurred in the field of acupuncture academics ,research and techniques after the 1950's ,a great amount of word was conducted in literary investigations ,clinical observations resulting in many achievements .Of special effectiveness .At present more and more attention has been paid to traditional techniques with physical include : Electro acupuncture electro heat acupuncture ,electric stimulus at points and microwave acupuncture combined with magnetic ,as well as cupping ,point injection ,catgut embedding therapy ,litigation method cutting therapy to name a few. Some therapeutic approaches put emphasis on point selections in local area resulting in the development of ,and now commonly used auricular acupuncture ,scalp acupuncture and wrist ankle acupuncture ,as well as face , nose and hand acupuncture all of which not only expand the treatment ranges of acupuncture therapy , but also promoted the development of acupuncture medical science .

The origin of moxibustion techniques
As a warm heat therapy moxibustion has a close relationship with fire. The invention and utilization of fire was of great significance to the procreation of human beings and it simultaneously created the necessary conditions for the emergence of moxibustion .Therefore  moxibustion began to take shape with the application of fire burning methods for and it has developed during the practice. Ancient people occasionally discovered fire or heat could relieve or eliminate pain associated with some diseases. Their intuitive application of fire -burning methods for treating various diseases resulted in the development of moxibustion. In the early days tree branches or dried grass was applied for smoking, ironing or burnin.

Miracles of acupuncture

Spanning a period of 2500 years, acupuncture is a method of therapeutic restoration that is internationally acclaimed and extends to historical eras from the east to west. The term acupuncture can be defined as a whole set of varying healing methods comprising of stimulating various areas of the body with the help of a multitude amounts of techniques.

Acupuncture means inserting hair-thin needles into different areas of the body covered by skin. This procedure is known to provide a healing and helpful sense of effect which in turn has led to providing relief from a lot of different illnesses. This way of healing works on the person in an entirety and aids in enhancing their health and condition. Acupuncture is an exceptionally calm and temperate method of providing operative relief.

The art of acupuncture was originally created and practiced in China and play major role in the TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Acupuncture cannot strictly be referred to as proper science as it is based on pseudoscience and holds a variety of different principles, all of which depend on wavering morals and philosophies. The procedures of Acupuncture fluctuate with the geographical locations of different countries. After China, the country that uses this practice the most is the United States of America.

Acupuncture is regularly practiced to relieve pain but also holds other applicable cures and treatments for several different conditions and illnesses. Acupuncture cannot be solely performed rather it has to be practiced with some other method of curation to be totally effective.

Acupuncture is believed to play a role in balancing and maintaining harmony within an individual’s core energy. Old practitioners hold the ideal that acupuncture is a spiritual procedure of healing that can cure all illnesses. But obviously the same belief is not held by many of today’s doctors and other specialists. They claim that while acupuncture can provide momentary relief to an individual, it can in no way provide a long lasting cure to illnesses such as diabetes and liver or kidney diseases. However, acupuncture is still a sacred method of therapeutic relief used and brought into practice by many.

The needles used in the application of acupuncture are solid pieces of often stainless steel but gold and silver may also be used to create these needles. Their measurements range from 13-70mm, though, you can also buy 150mm long needles that are said to be recyclable. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and fine, they are also quite flexible and rounded in shape but have a sharp and piercing tip. These needles are beyond safe. They are known as “atraumatic” which basically means that they do not tear through tissue like most normal or typical (hypodermic) needles. They are created in a very particular way which gives them permission to effortlessly and easily slither or glide through the skin tissue and makes it highly improbable and implausible to incur any bleeding or injury to the basic arrangements of the anatomy beneath the skin.

Acupuncture induces the conviction that there is an energy that travels body and flows or mingles throughout our entire body starting from the very top of our head to the soles of our feet. This energy is known as Qi and pronounced as ‘chee’. There are certain passageways and trails in our body that are known as meridians and it is believed that Qi, the spiritual energy of our body, circulates without any obstructions throughout our body in case of a good health. The theory regarding meridian is that every single meridian is attached to a particular organ system in our body and whenever this circulation of energy is disturbed due to any harmful injury or a disease, our body or that certain organ system and its organs experience severe ache and pain or develop a sickness. In case of these scenarios, acupuncture is the healing method that fixes the balance of Qi and properly arranges our body’s usual characteristic to heal.

The amount of needles (which can vary from as few as 3 to as many as 20) as well as the period of time they are to be kept in is reliant on the illness that is supposedly being treated. Sessions with a specialist of this method retain for up to an hour.

These acupuncture needles are kept in the body for fifteen to thirty minutes and the specialist may move the needles around to apparently make the circulation of Qi stronger or weaker. Some of the methods used in acupuncture are the lifting, twisting and rotating of the needles.

Another similar method to acupuncture is cupping. Cupping is a procedure in which small cups are heated and placed over the skin. After they are removed small, circular wet welts are left behind. Cupping is also believed to correct the imbalance of Qi in the body.

Acupuncture is most commonly known to fix the side effects of cancer. People seek out acupuncture to secure relief from arthritis to migraines as well as the after effects of chemotherapy. Acupuncture is also known to hinder people from taking up smoking. The NCCIH has proven that acupuncture aids in getting rid of knee, neck, low back pains and osteoarthritis. WHO (World Health Organization) has also proven that acupuncture helps with blood pressure, nausea and vomiting incurred due to chemotherapy, peptic ulcer and other gastric conditions, severely painful menstruation cramps and periods, dysentery, facial aches, allergic rhinitis, morning sickness during pregnancy, sprains, sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis, pain in teeth. Acupuncture also helps decrease the chances of a stroke and prompts labour.

Just like a massage, many individuals find acupuncture to be very soothing and calming. They feel a strong sense of relaxation after a session of acupuncture. During a session of acupuncture, the acupuncture needles are warmed or electrically charged to enhance the outcome of the healing process. An acupuncturist makes the patient lie down on a padded table; calming music is played in the back, incurring a sense of strong calm and peace.
Acupuncture is meant to improve and prompt the natural healing trait of the body, enhance an individual’s inner spiritual energy and disposition, decrease and relieve any experiencing aches and pain as well as advance and increase the bodily functions of the hurt areas. It is a substitute method for medications and surgery. It is a secure, protected and operational method that provides a cure when the general medical procedures have been unsuccessful.

What is acupuncture

What is acupuncture

About Acupuncture:
Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural self-healing process. This practice is several thousand years old and is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and is carried out by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very specific body locations know as acupuncture points, or acupoints.

According to TCM, the Chinese term chi synonym to life force or vital energy, is considered as energy channels that flow in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy pathways in the body are known as meridians. When the flow of chi through the meridians is blocked or when there is imbalance between the two types of chi (yin and yang), health deviates from pink giving way for the illness to supersede. The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions, reestablish the regular flow and restore the balance of chi through the meridians, thus giving back wealth to health.

Types of Acupunture:
In addition to needling acupuncture points, acupuncture treatment may include other techniques such as: TCM based acupuncture: This type of acupuncture involves the burning of Chinese medicinal herbs that are used along with the acupuncture treatment to aid in the strengthening of body.

Japanese acupuncture:
The comfort level and the depth of needling are often gentler and subtler than the other acupuncture techniques. The main goal in the Japanese style is to diagnose and treat any core imbalance within the patient, so that and the body is better positioned to heal itself with longer lasting changes.

Auricular acupuncture:
Auricular acupuncture is based on normalizing the body's dysfunction through stimulation of definite points on the external ear surface. Ear acupuncture has proven
to be an efficient method of treating a wide variety of conditions, from headaches and allergies to addictions and pain disorders.

Korean hand acupuncture:
In this particular style, the hands are seen as a microcosm of the entire body. Fine needles are inserted into specific points on the hand to bring in body balance and wellness through the hands.

Cupping:
The basic idea behind cupping therapy is to place glass cups or silicone cups on the patient’s skin to create a vacuum, so the blood is drawn to the surface of the skin in specific parts of the body that need healing. This technique resolves myriad of problems right from common cold to respiratory problems.

Moxibustion:
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called "moxa" are burned on or very near the surface of the skin to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi in the body and dispel certain pathogenic influences.

Electro acupuncture:
Electroacupuncture adds a microcurrent to the needle so as to enhance the function of that specific point which thereby activates different types of regeneration in the body.

Medical acupuncture:
Medical acupuncture is performed by a licensed medical doctor. It incorporates the medical science surrounding neuromuscular anatomy. Some also include historically Chinese acupuncture patterns; thereby, creating a hybrid of western and eastern medical knowledge.

Benefits:
Hundreds of clinical studies on the benefits of acupuncture show that it successfully treats back pain, neck pain, nausea, migraine, headache, anxiety, depression, insomnia, menstrual problems, infertility, eye ailments, diabetes and lot more problems.
