Acupuncture for migraine

Migraine manifests as severe and replaced headache,generally unilateral. It is characterised by sudden repeated headache , which may resolve spontaneously or with drug treatment without sequelae , and recurrences after various periods when the patient is free from headache. The pathogenesis is in stagnation of liver qi with the invasion of stomach qi.

Migraine headaches respond well to Shaochong (H9) . Manual stimulation of LI4 produces immediate relief (not to be used in pregnant women).

In the treatment of migrane,the Gall Bladder Meridian,is used most frequently and remote points in the four extremitities are used. Acupoints in yang meridians especially Fengchi(GB20),Sizhukong (TE23) and shuiagu (GB 8)in shaoyang meridians are used most frequently.In terms of classification of the special points selected besides the crossing points with meridian qi passing through and crossing in the head, points below the elbow and knee joints such as source points,Luo connecting points,eight confluence points as well as five shu points.
